Network +
Description
If you have a computer network at your work or facility, think about the impact on your business if the network were to fail or perform poorly. This could be due to poor network design or maybe a malfunctioning device such as a network interface adaptor, network switch or router.
Network+ provides students with the key fundamental concepts of networking technology needed to maintain and troubleshoot equipment in a locally maintained computer network. Before students can learn the intricate details of basic networks or the function of internal networks which allow multiple computers to communicate, they must first learn what a network is. The Network+ course is a fundamental course for network technicians.
In the lecture portion of this course, learners will:
• Define what types of devices are used to build a network and the specific functions of each.
• How the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model is used to package data from a computer for transport over the network.
• The difference between a server and a workstation computer and their relationship to each other.
• The various services running in the background that computers use to establish and maintain communications across the network.
• Troubleshooting fundamental communication issues on the network.
Students who have completed the Network+ course often remark that they learned a great deal of practical information that can be directly applied to their job. There is something in the Network+ course for all students from those that have little or no networking experience to those who have been in the industry for years.
During the lab portion of this course, learners will:
• Setup simple networks using preconfigured routers and switches
• Configure a network adapter to connect to a LAN
• Differentiate between broadcast and collision domains in networking
• Setup wireless communications on Personal Computers using both the A-Hoc and Infrastructure mode of communication.
• Participate in a team effort to design a small business type network and implement it in the second week.
• Participate in a team effort to debug problems with the small business network that they have designed.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Gain the ability to define and apply network terminology, design, and implementation.
- Learn basics of network interconnect devices.
- Gain an understanding of network addressing.
- Learn to use network utilities and protocols.
- Learn about major network operating system platforms (UNIX, Novell Netware, Microsoft Windows Server) .
- Learn the specifics of network cabling and card installation.
- Experience hands-on network troubleshooting to solve the most common network issues.
Target Audience
Information Technology personnel, Network Administrators or anyone with an interest in understanding how to install, maintain and troubleshoot a computer network. Anyone responsible for a computer network.
Course Completion Requirements
Successful completion of this course requires 72-hours of attendance, completion of all guided labs and completing a practice test, of the Network+ exam, with an overall score of 72 or greater.
Pre-requisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
